'Japanese agency providing funds to upgrade 58 public schools in Sindh'

Education minister says schools in 12 districts of Sindh will be upgraded to elementary level

KARACHI: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing funds to upgrade 58 primary public girls' schools to middle schools in rural areas of Sindh, said Education and Literacy Minister Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar.

He said this at the inauguration ceremony of government Girls Elementary Schools at Walidad Jokhio union council Siri Thana Bola Khan Jamshoro District on Thursday. Dahar added that after declaring emergency in education sector, many revolutionary steps had been taken to improve the education system in Sindh.

Dahar said that these 58 schools will be provided the facility of solar power system and announced that Girls Elementary Schools will be upgraded to high school level. According to Dahar, the Sindh government, especially the education department, gives respect and importance to the role of JICA in enhancing and improving infrastructure and educational standards in Sindh. Funds are being provided for the missing facilities in schools, Dahar claimed.

The Sindh government, with the assistance of JICA, will upgrade the primary schools into elementary schools in 12 districts of Sindh, Dahar said. These are Mirpurkhas, Badin, Tando Allahyar, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Benazirabad, Dadu, Larkana, Khairpur, Sukkur, Ghotki and Shikarpur.

According to him, this scheme will cost Rs2.08 billion, of which Sindh government will bear Rs409 million. He said that the main objective of the scheme is to address gender gap, overcome rural urban disparities and enhance education standards in Sindh.

Addressing the audience, Japanese Consul-General Toshikazu Isamura said Japan is committed to giving better education facilities to the students, especially the female students in Sindh. Education department's schools secretary, Abdul Aziz Uqaili, and JICA chief representative Yasuhire Tojo also spoke on the occasion.
