ISLAMABAD: A total of 55% of Pakistanis believe Kashmiris and Pathans have the best looks in the country, according to a recently released survey by Gilani Research Foundation/Gallup Pakistan.

The survey asked a nationally representative sample of 2,666 men and women across the country the following question:

In your opinion which people in Pakistan are the most good looking?

Kashmiris and Pathans stood out as the best looking amongst all linguistic groups, with 29 per cent voting for Kashmiris and 26 per cent for Pathans. Other responses accounted for 45 per cent of the entire vote.

The figure varies from province to province, with admiration for Pathans at 21 per cent in Punjab, 15 per cent in Sindh, 50 per cent in Balochistan and 64 per cent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Votes for Kashmiris stood at 31 per cent in Punjab, 40 per cent in Sindh, 21 per cent in Balochistan and 4 per cent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The recent survey was carried out among a sample of men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country.

Error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.

The complete survey report can be found here.

Well why does it say 55% of Pakistanis? Only from the sample and how many people from the sample were Non Pathans or Kashmiris? Those who are claiming that the study being based on a sample of just 2666 (out of a total population of 170 million), is flawed need to take a basic lesson in sampling and research. Actually as long as the sample is representative, it doesn’t matter what the population is, a sample size of 2000 (regardless of the population) gives a level of accuracy of +/- 2.1%. Sample sizes this small are commonly used to project winners of political elections throughout the world, with very accurate results.

Physical beauty or at least perceived by others (excluding social preferences) depends the quality of Genes. Pathans/Kashmirs have been at the crossroads of invading armies all the way till Greece and Central Asia; this intermingling of genes over centuries times enhances feature profile. South of Indian subcontinent have seen less of human migration, hence lower perceived beauty as then genes gets repeated in the small population group.Recommend

I think there is beauty in all of Pakistan’s races because of the unique mixture of peoples who settled the land there. They evolved over thousands of years to become the races we now see in Pakistan. Certainly most South Asians agree that Pakistani races are the most beautiful but I am sure that you would equally find beautiful Baluchi, Sindi and Punjabi in addition to Pashtuns and Kashmiris. As for Gilgitis and Chitralis, they are also beautiful races who are fairer than Pashtun and Kashmiris so this isn’t about colour alone.Recommend

I have seen most of Pakistan and my experience tells me that Pakistan is a mix of variety of ethnic groups, most of the ppl are of the native sub continent origin with similarities those of Indians & other south asian nations, sometimes back in the UK we can’t differentiate who is Pakistani and who is Indian. BUT BUT on the other hand I was very astonished & surprised to see that their are ppl in balochistan, peshawar, swat and northern areas who even have european, middleeastern & central asian looks and men and women there if living abroad in Americas or Europe could never be identified as pakistanis. the whole point is that beautiful ppl are found all over the country but NWFP provice/northern parts and some areas of balochistan, kashmir are drastically different from the rest of the Sub continental creed.Recommend

I have visited almost all the Pakistan and has interacted with people from all parts and ethnic groups. They are all beautiful but Pathans are wonderful people with exceptional beauty, talent and bravery. They are very loyal to their country and the peace loving people far away from hatred. They can be your best friends or deadly enemies. They cannot be beaten or stopped by force rather they better understand the language of love. Even you can make them your slave by love and affection and i think thats the only reason the britishers succeed to rule them. Above all they are very innocent and are totally different from their picture potrayed by the media. The only problem of Pathans is the lack of education and opportunities. As it turns out you have inferiority complex inside your own country. And rightly so because most Pakistanis I have come across are equally brown skinned as most other South Asians. But yet in their mind they feel they are fair skinned. Pathan’s are not South Asians, so they don’t count & Kashmiri’s are an exception in an ocean of beautiful shades of brown.Recommend

Great. We should be very good at heart instead of good-looking face.

Majority of teenaged suicide-bombers are also very pretty, young and energetic.

Lanky and stout-figured bengalis and South-Indians are advancing in the field of education,

computer, medical and engineering all over the world Be it is Medical College of Kolikata or the

Johns Hopkins hospital USA, you will find majority of doctors from South India and Bengal either

West Bengal or Dhaka (Bangladesh). While at abroad they behave with their countrymen in

such a polite and humble manner as if they are talking to their real brothers and elders while

very unfortunately, a negligible number of Pakistani doctors change their way after sighting

    Pakistani coming from onward.

This is the most stupid attitude of our pakistani brothers who make false claim of being muslim

and follower of the Khatim-ul-Nabeen (SAW), they even don’t know the real meanings of the

Khatim-ul-Nabeen (SAW) which means “Seal ” of the Holy Prophet (SAW).

We don’t need good faces, we badly need good attitude and behaviour. Good faces are very

temporary that ends up in bed and fades with the passage of time. The ever-lasting impression

is good behavior and attidue. Good faces are purchaseable at any rate but not good conduct

    and behaviour.

We should demnostrate practically for being the follower of the Khatim-ul-Nabeen

    (PBUH).

    @owais swati:

Why Bengalis disassociated themself from this type of Pakistan and established their separate
homeland now known as Bangladesh. Do you remember they were bengalis who laid foundation of pakistan.

It is shameful we are stubborn and intransigient by nature to accept reality and still deny having ethnic division in Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is all nonsense and stupidity. Regrettably, today’s
Pakistan is divided into particles while handful of progressive and literate people are trying to gather pieces into pieces to re-unify our homeland that seemingly appears to be 500-year long
    mega project.

Lack of political leadership and acumen following the death of Jinnah not only created huge vacuum in this fragile society or group of people but paved way for strayed people in short
clergy that misused authority by befouling novices.

History bears the fact that relligious bonds never proved effective instrument for unity and unification otherwise Pakistan would never have dismembered and Bangladesh came into being.
Bengalis are more staunch and committed muslims than Pakistanis are.

If religiious bonds was strong enough entire muslim community would stand united today under one banner but very sorry to say that there is hardly any reflection of unity and cohesion among
57-nation which claim to be Islamic.

Religion is purely a personal affair of an individual. It has nothing to do with runing administrative
and political machinery of the state. It is only EDUCATION and mindset of the people that brings changes in human societies at snail pace and not overnight.

Pakistani nation currently needs revolutionary changes in mind that can only be possible through revolution in education system of our country and there is no harm in emulating example of India, our most immediate neighbor in the region.

Remember, possesion of nuclear capability has proved yet another futile and useless weapon by any nation in the world that witnessed its failure in recent Tsunami in Japan.

@Tanzeel: I don’t think that people refer to the skin tone by many in Karachi as ” tanned”. They are simply shades of brown. Tanned is usually used to refer to fir skinned people who have become bronzed by sun exposure. For example the fairer skinned Pashtuns, Gilgitis or Kashmiris become tanned when they are exposed to excessive sun. Tanning refers actually to a mild form of solar injury to the skin. Generally the Pakistani ideal of beauty favours a more olive skin tone and the facial/ body features found in Northern Punjab, Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa, Baluchistan, Gilgit and Kashmir. Beauty is a subjective thing. I would say there is beauty al over Pakistan. As for whether you prefer brains to looks, that is your perogative in a free society.Recommend

@MP: Maybe it means also that people prefer the looks of the Muslim invaders who came to take over South Asia. Many of them were fairer skinned Central Asians which is why the centre and northwest of Pakistan. The south of Pakistan is where darker skinned arabs conquored in Sind. The colour preference in Pakistan may have to do with people wanting to identify with Muslim invaders. But then Pashtuns and Kashmiris as well as Giligits are all native so this confuses the matter. Dark skinned people are thought to be more pure Indian or from India. This has nothing to do with the Indian caste system which has to do with Brahmins and Shudrs in India.Recommend

I don’t think that such ridiculous surveys should be conducted. Our society has enough complexes and insecurities to deal with without having to get depressed about whether or not they were born into the ”Good-looking” caste… there is much more to a person than their looks… haven’t these fools heard of the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover?” And its rubbish to think that’s a just a saying that ”Ugly people” came up with. I am a Kashmiri… Id like to think I’m friggin drop dead gorgeous!!… I am proud of my origins and all… but I would rather be proud to be called a Pakistani… and be judged upon my virtue and positive traits and and all… rather than the ”chitta-pun” and ”teeekay teeekay nain naksh” phenomena :s
    Ps…. Come onnnnn Pakistan….. and Englanddddd…into the finaallllll!!!Recommend

I am studying in the university of oxfordshire in UK. Before I was thinking Pathans (Pushtuns) as people who only knows to fight and to kill but my personal interaction with my Pathan friends proved that how wrong i was. Its not only about their appearance, no doubt they are gorgeous and handsome but they are people of good character and behaviour as well. They are talented. brave, confident, respectful, helpful and friendly people. I can’t explain their qualities in words. They are the people with countless abilities. Simply i love them. Recommend

I am a kashmiri women and very good intigrated in the german society. My husband is a very loving, handsome, laughing-nature, emotional and down to earth MAKRANI man from Karachi and as well has intrigated in this liberal german society. I love him from my heart. Our pakistani society has a sick prejudice against dark colour humans and is totally blind for their natural beauty.
I, as a woman detest the majority of pathan men, because of their barbarian and medieval attitude towards women. Their fair colour and good looks are totally meaningless. Kashmiris of Lahore are great, good looking, jolly, social and very liberal towards women. I myself am the 7th generation Lahori kashmiran, born in bazaar-e-hakimaN, Bhatti gate, Lahore………..Recommend

“Handsome is that handsome does” and the “Beauty lies in the eyes of the Beholder” are time-tested and accepted truths. Every person has been blessed her/his kind of beauty that appeals deep into the heart of the one “enabled to appreciate”. Not all are!!!

And, of course I know of some wonderful and good-looking (by all customary measures)couples whose chemistry never worked and they excelled in giving ‘hell’ to each other while bringing up their children as well as they could till they withered into old age! At the end, nothing else but regrets of misfortune and un-ending blame-game!!!

So, the subject of the gallup was frivolous to say the least. Better ‘subjects’ should be chosen by Gilani Research Foundation/Gallup Pakistan for survey which can help substantiate data-availibility for ploicy frame-work.

As a low-brow mind-mold, unnecessary emphasis on ‘appearance’ leads to arrogance, self-indulgence and irrelevance of core-values.Recommend
