'Agricultural researches a prerequisite to alleviating poverty’

Experts identify 13 priority researchable areas of the sector

FAISALABAD: A knowledge-based economy and problem-solving agricultural researches are prerequisites to addressing the issues of the sector and help alleviate poverty, said agriculture experts Friday.

They said this at a meeting of the Council for Research and Policy and the third round of the research grants, under the US-Pakistan Centre for Advanced Studies (USPCAS) in Agriculture and Food Security, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF).

The meeting, which was chaired by UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, also identified 13 priority researchable areas of the agriculture sector under the USPCAS five chairs including precision agriculture, outreach, biotechnology, climate changes and agricultural policy.

Dr Iqrar called for concerted efforts and tangible research work to lead the change process and the industry. He said that under the USPCAS, the commissioned researches were being carried under the competitive process that would help uplift the sector.

“The ever-increasing population and diminishing agriculture lands are posing serious threats for which we have to adopt special measures,” he said, adding that scientists should come up with viable solutions to make the agriculture sector sustainable and profitable.
