KARACHI: Shahabuddin Ghanchi, a resident of Azizabad in Gulberg, took off from work on Wednesday as he waited anxiously for the census staff to come to his house during the first phase of census.

According to Ghanchi, he finally received the census team at around 12 pm. As there is no adult in my house, therefore I had to do this for the national cause, he stated.

District Central has been divided into 85 charges, 586 circles and 3,210 blocks in five sub-divisions of Gulberg Town, Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad and New Karachi.

Lumped together: Karachi's immigrants want to be counted in the census

Residents of the district welcomed the national census happening after 19 years. The anxious denizens woke up early in the morning to welcome the census teams at their homes even though the exercise for the three days involved only house listing.

Ghanchi explained that upon opening the door he was asked to show his Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) after which his house was numbered by one of the team members.

Living in the same locality, Muhammad Shariq said it will be his first experience as he has never experienced the process of census. He added his parents had woken him early so that he could witness the process.

Nationwide issue: Speakers demand accuracy in upcoming national census

Assistant Census Commissioner Raees Shaikh of Gulberg, who was supervising the teams working in different circles, said that census is a huge responsibility on them, which is why he has been directed to maintain communication with the teams on ground. “I have received not many complaints but some teams have informed that people are lazy in showing their CNICs and, in other cases, elders are not present at home,” he said.
