International cricket returns to Pakistan

Published: March 7, 2017

Fresh from hosting the Pakistan Super League final, there is more good news for Pakistan cricket as the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering sending a World XI side to Lahore to play a four-match T20 series in September.

The series, which will be another giant leap towards restoring foreign players’ confidence in visiting Pakistan, has been named ‘The Independence Cup’.

“The desire is to give cricket-starved Pakistani supporters the chance to see some of the world’s finest players in live action,” said the ICC’s Pakistan Task Force head Giles Clarke. “The world of cricket needs to help Pakistan, who cannot continue to play their home fixtures overseas.

“The youth need inspiring, and the national teams need far more cricket played in familiar terrain. Furthermore, the terrorists cannot win and cricket must not give up on Pakistan.”

The announcement also gave PSL mastermind Najam Sethi an opportunity to gloat and show his critics how wrong they were when they doubted that the PSL final in Lahore would do nothing.

No further details of the World XI side have yet been released, although the matches will be staged on September 22, 23, 28 and 29.

Since the infamous terrorist attack of 2009 on Sri Lanka cricket team on their soil, all the teams have refused to tour Pakistan, with Zimbabwe being the only exception two years ago.

During this time, the cricket-frenzied nation’s national team has played their home series in their adopted home ground of the UAE.

In the modern world of media, one can create delusions to give some people alternate realities most the times, but you cannot delude most of the people most of the times. I doubt if they really know the meaning of international cricket. Recommend

I don’t have any dissonance towards hosting an ICC event in Lahore, but why not other territories such as Karachi, Peshawar, Gujranwala and Faisalabad.Recommend

Icc will send a world 11 by the end of sep to play 4 matches in lahore :) I distinctly remember jayasuria lara and others representing world 11 abt 3-4 years ago in karachi also zim touring pak 2015 but international cricket did not return to Pakistan…. Also sep end sa playing Bangladesh, England playing westindies, Indians won’t come to Pakistan as their govt won’t allow, Meaning the only countries left are aus, nz or Sri hmmm and what if they too arrange a series soooo who will ICC send Pakistan to play :) Ireland, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan Haha and that’s a WORLD 11 or may be retired and discarded players or club cricketers will come…. What’s the headline again? International cricket returns to Pakistan… Wah, if they r happy then make an international tour in Pakistan 3 odis against srilanka or a triseries in lahore for a week

create a green zone around 4 cities and their stadiums meaning Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta.. give the control to army again if we can have 4-5 games in 2-3 days each venue and arrange a funfair or two in each venue as well so players can feel good and relax rather than terifiedRecommend
