Openers Ahmad Shahzad and Asad Shafiq struck commanding half-centuries as Quetta Gladiators beat Karachi Kings by six wickets in the 15th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) second edition at Dubai Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Chasing 155 to win the match, both openers showed their class on the top of the order, and scored 105 runs for the first wicket to hand their team an easy win on the night.

What hosting the PSL final in Lahore means

Shahzad finished the innings with the top score of 54 off 40 balls, which included four fours and three sixes, whereas Asad Shafiq scored 51 off 38 balls with the help of six fours and one six.

For Karachi, pacer Sohail Khan claimed two, whereas leg-spinner Usama Mir picked one wicket.

Earlier, after being sent in to bat first, Karachi had another dream beginning thanks to captain Kumar Sangakara and Babar Azam, who added 63 runs for the first wicket.

Asad Shafiq seeking T20 improvement through PSL

However, once Sangakara departed in the eighth over, Kings lost their way due to some clueless batting, especially from the likes of Chris Gayle, and only managed to score 154 runs for the loss of six wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

Young Babar finished the innings with the top score of 36 off 37 balls, whereas West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard scored 31 off just 19 balls.

For Quetta, off-spinner Mahmudullah claimed three, whereas pacer Anwar Ali picked two wickets.

Presentation:

Mahmudullah (Man of the match): Yea I am really happy to contribute for the team. I wasn’t expecting the ball to turn so much, and I was just trying to maintain my length. I am enjoying every bit of it here in the PSL.

Kumar Sangakara: We had a great start, but we couldn’t hit many boundaries afterwards from the over number 12 to 17. Strike rotation was not great, and we were not hitting the boundaries any way. We should’ve got 180-190 today, but it wasn’t to be. We have to win two out of two to make it to the playoffs, so we are looking forward to that.

Sarfraz Ahmed: I am thankful to the Almighty. I am glad the way bowlers bowled, especially from young Hasan Khan, who put a great show against the likes of Chris Gayle. Mahmudullah played the role we were hoping for. We never try to look at the players in the other team, all we want to do is focus on our game and I believe that is the key to our success.
