RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has shortlisted two firms for preparing technical design and financial plan for project of making Marrir Chowk and Liaquat Chowk on Benazir Bhutto Road signal free.

A senior official in RDA informed The Express Tribune that Nespak and Usmani and Co were shortlisted on January 28 for preparing a PC-I for the project. He said that the authority had further asked both firms to submit their Request for Proposal (RFP). He said that the firms would have to submit the RFPs within ten days.

Traffic at both intersections remains choked at rush hours resulting in long queues. The traffic jams on the busy Benazir Bhutto Road at the two points had become a regular feature.

The traffic police authorities had time and again asked RDA to make the two points signal free for easy flow of traffic as all other points from Flashman Hotel to Faizabad have already been made signal free.

The two intersections also connect the older city with main artery of the city. Further traffic coming from Islamabad and going towards Saddar also gets stuck at the two points leading to grid locks on all connect roads.

The official said that Punjab government had provided Rs10 million for preparing a feasibility plan for the project. He said that the designs for making the two intersections signal free could entail both underpass and flyover.

RDA spokesperson Irfan Ahmed said that the authority would finalise the company on Febrauary 17 after the RFPs have been studied by the engineering department.
