PHF shortlists players for training camp

Phase two will focus on individual skills, specialities

KARACHI: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has shortlisted 47 players for the second phase of the national senior camp, which commences from February 11 at the National Hockey Stadium, Lahore.

The first phase of the senior camp took place at the Abdul Sattar Edhi Hockey Stadium in Karachi where 72 probables trained for a month.

Head coach Muhammad Khawaja, who has been in charge of the team for the past seven months, was content with the way the opening phase of the camp was conducted. "It was really exciting to see talented and passionate players who want to improve their hockey," he said.

"In the first phase, every individual was tested and trained physically in the field. The players responded to our methods very well and took keen interest in every training session."

Khawaja further said that the players will now be focused on improving their skills.

"In the second phase of the camp, the players' skills and their specialties will be identified and will be honed accordingly," he said adding that the players will also play practice matches to spot their weak areas.

"The facilities here are better but the turf in Karachi was in really good condition which saved the players from getting injured," he added.

Meanwhile, PHF has also announced the names of 36 U18 players shortlisted after phase one. They will also begin phase two from February 11 at the Johar Hockey Stadium in Lahore under the supervision of camp commandant Kamran Ashraf.
