The reason why the Defence Housing Authority removed the Khayaban-e-Shamsheer road divider in front of Khadda Market is to experiment with making Zamzama one-way to the Two Swords roundabout.
“The division was removed to allow for heavy traffic flows and to assess the feasibility of the plan,” explained DHA PRO Col (retd) Rafat Hussain Naqvi. The plan includes making Zamzama one-way towards Two Swords with it looping back from a route that goes behind Zamzama Park.
According to DHA’s director of development, Col. (retd) Ahmar, it will take one and a half months to fix the plan as the route behind the park is slightly complicated.
There is no straight road parallel to Zamzama and the area is entirely residential. “There are problems but DHA is taking steps to address them diligently,” said Col. (retd) Ahmar. “The diversions will still be intact around shopping venues on Zamzama,” he clarified.
According to Ahmar, one of the hurdles to this plan is that people still double park and it is hard to persuade people not to park on the street. DHA’s solution is a multi-storeyed car parking plaza but this will take about a year to make.
One resident of DHA, who did not want to be named, said that the authority should ideally inform residents about their plans. “Nobody knew why the divider was removed,” she said.
