The Aga Khan University’s Medical College received two ASPIRE awards - for international excellence in education in a medical school - from the Association for Medical Education in Europe in Prague.

KARACHI: After a video went viral on social media, the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) administration had to issue a statement on Friday expressing ‘sincere condolences’ to a family whose elderly patient died due to the hospital’s alleged negligence.

In the said video, son of the deceased patient could be seen complaining about the AKUH staff’s alleged negligence, which reportedly resulted in the death of his father on Thursday morning.

Court dismisses plea of ‘erring’ doctor

According to an attendant, the elderly patient died when he was administered wrong medical treatment by a trainee doctor. Apparently responding to the video, the AKUH said: "We will continue to fully investigate the situation and do what we can to support them [the victim’s family] in this time of grief."

The hospital, however, added that the family became violent towards its doctors, nurses, staff and property during the event, with little consideration for other sickly patients and their families also in the hospital during this time.

‘Health care commission prohibits registration of FIRs against doctors’

“The AKUH appreciates that the patients and families are dealing with very difficult circumstances whilst in our hospital and emotions can run high. [However,] we take care of the sickest of patients and often they come to us as a last resort," it said.

Sameer | 7 years ago | Reply Well, I'll also lodge a complaint against the AKU's one of the consultants who was unable to diagnose my sister for three and half year despite regular visits. In another case, my mother used to visit the hospital for five years but never treated well with her asthma. The third experience I had was when a lady doctor referred my son from AKU facility to her private clinic. The complaint was registered but was not addressed the issue. I met several other patients with one or another such complaints.
Anonymous | 7 years ago | Reply I would like to second that AKU is an incompetent organisation, overcharging and mistreating its patients. However, problem is that the other hospitals are even worse than AKU. So, I choose AKU not because like their professional attitude or I am satisfied with their competency level of their doctors but because they are lesser of 2 evils. Lastly, please note they do have some amazing doctors and some amazing staff but at the same time they have incompetent doctors and staff present too. Since, no hospital in our country like no organisation is accountable they behave like they own the patient and be rude to them, etc. However, at the same time our beloved public that is us have no concept of patience, lines or treating people with respect. Towards the end I would like to say we as in the people and the hospital need to be responsible for our actions and treat each other as human beings. Yes a person/doctor can make a mistake but there is a proper manner or procedure by which it needs to be handled, screaming or breaking things or hiding from people is not the correct way.
