We do have our heroes

Salman Rasheed May 13, 2010

KARACHI: This is with reference to George Fulton’s article ‘Holding out for a hero’ (May 12).

May I ask the writer why he chose not to mention our founding fathers such as the Quaid, Allama Iqbal and Liaquat Ali Khan? These individuals made personal sacrifices and dedicated their lives to the service of the nation.

Also, why does Mr Fulton belittle Imran Khan all the time? He was a world-class cricketer who won us the World Cup and also gave us a cancer hospital, without any government help. And now he has set up a college in Mianwali.

Mehroz Siraj Sadruddin | 14 years ago | Reply I think that our general concept of 'heroes' needs to be looked into again. In my opinion, a hero would be someone who can make me feel proud as a Pakistani world over. In Pakistan, what is now required is that people from all walks should be studied and reported about. There are many people out there doing a whole-bunch of good things, but the masses really dont know much about them. Our newspapers should report more about people like those involved behind the Rashidabad project, people running institutions like the Zindagi Trust and even foreigners like Greg Mortensen and Stanley Wolpert. These are the people who in their respective capacities are doing what they can in order to improve the lives, understanding and levels of education for the common people of Pakistan... The media needs to highlight their good work, for it is only people like them, who can really make our nation's youth believe in a bright future for Pakistan!
