The right to choose: Couple moves court against ‘false allegations’

IHC directs two police officials, girl’s uncle to respond by March 25.

ISLAMABAD:

A newly married couple on Wednesday moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the Shahzad Town police for registering a “fake FIR” against them.

Saima Shaheen and her husband, Muhammad Ikram, pleaded that they are a lawfully married couple and the FIR registered with Shahzad Town police claiming that the two are involved in an illicit relationship is false. The case was registered against the couple by Shaheen’s uncle, Tahir Mehmood, on March 3.

The petitioner’s counsel said that the girl’s uncle, Mehmood, wanted her to annul her marriage with Ikram and filed an FIR against them when she refused to comply. He said that the couple got married in accordance to law and Shaheen’s statements were recorded before the Judicial Magistrate. “The couple have been wrongly involved in the case and their rights have been violated.” He pleaded the court to declare the FIR null and void.

During the course of hearing, IHC Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman issued notice to the Station House Officer and Investigation Officer of Shahzad Town Police station, along with the girl’s uncle, Mehmood, to respond by March 25.
