ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) will start taking  action against lane violations from Monday (today).

According to an ITP statement issued on Sunday, Traffic SSP Matloob Hussein appealed to citizens to cooperate with the police in their efforts to enforce lane discipline and prevent accidents.

It has been observed that though people have grown up watching white lane markers on the roads, few care what purpose they are there for. In this regard, ITP started an awareness campaign to sensitise the people about what these lanes are and how to change lanes while driving, said the statement.

As a norm, people do not learn driving from authorised driving schools where traffic rules are taught as a theory subject. Most of the drivers are self-taught and some just drive off with their parents’ vehicles and learn after a few bumps here and there.

ITP said that the campaign initiated on the directive of Islamabad IG Tariq Masood Yasin would enter phase two, where instead of only warning people about lane discipline, traffic police would also take punitive action.

The statement reiterated that following a two-week awareness campaign, the traffic police will start taking action to implement lane rules.

Special squads would be deployed on Kashmir Highway, Islamabad Expressway, Murree Road, and other major thoroughfares to warn road users on lane violation and also educate them on the rules, the statement said.

Furthermore, signboards and banners have been put up on main roads of the city to teach traffic rules and importance of lanes.
