SUKKUR: The terms women and mathematics have remained distant for a long time.

This was stated by Sukkur Institute of Business Administration (IBA) dean and director Prof Nisar Ahmed Siddiqui while addressing the opening session of the two-day International Women in Mathematics Symposium on Saturday.  The event has been sponsored by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) with a media partnership with The Express Tribune.  “Today, I am very happy to see women taking an interest in mathematics,” he said, adding that Sukkur IBA has six PhD students of mathematics, out of which three are female.

In order to bridge the gender gap, Sukkur IBA took the initiative to organise the first international ‘Women in Mathematics Symposium’, said Siddiqui, adding that the goal was to encourage women to opt for a career in mathematical science and to promote the concept of equal opportunities and treatment of women in mathematics.

More than 200 people from 15 universities of Pakistan are participating in the symposium. Additionally, five scholars from the United Kingdom, China, Algeria and the United States are also participating.

Sukkur IBA assistant professor of mathematics Dr Rida Zainab and head of the mathematics department Dr Javeed Brohi thanked HEC for sponsoring the event and The Express Tribune for an exclusive media partnership for the event.
