ISLAMABAD:
Three members of a family were killed in a collision between a car and a Prado jeep on Park Road near Chatta Bakhtawar on Thursday night, police said.
Haji Malik Saeed, his wife Fakhra Sultana and their 35-year-old daughter Isma, were fatally injured when their Suzuki Mehran (HS-367) car overturned after being hit by a speeding Prado while taking a U-turn on Park Road. They were shifted to Polyclinic Hospital.
The couple was alive when they were brought to the hospital, but they died at around 4am, police and hospital sources said. Their daughter died few hours later on Friday evening, they said.
Haji Javed, Isma’s husband, lodged a complaint with the Shehzad Town police about the incident.
Police impounded the security agency’s vehicle but did not arrest the driver. “We handed him over to Military Police for further action after registering an FIR against him as according to law we cannot detain military personnel,” said a police official, requesting not to be named.
The Shehzad Town police maintained that they have registered a case against the driver of the Silver Toyota Prado (ICT MJ-641).
Police sources said senior officers of the sensitive agency were in the vehicle when the accident occurred, however, their identities could not be ascertained. They maintained that the Prado was speeding and at fault for the accident.
However, a senior police official claimed that the Prado’s driver was alone. “He was alone and on his way to pick officers from the airport,” he said. He added that after taking U-turn, the Suzuki Mehran car came onto the wrong side of the road. The driver of the Prado applied brakes but could not avoid the car.
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Malik Umer Hayat said that the police took the driver into custody and impounded the vehicle.
Upon learning the driver’s identity, senior officials of his organisation were contacted. The driver was handed over to the Military Police for further action after registering an FIR against him, he said.
“Except for murder, in all other cases defence personnel are handed over to Military Police (MP) for further action,” said Hayat. A copy of the FIR was also sent to the MP, he added.
The bodies of the three victims of the accident were handed over to the family.
