It is hardly surprising but Aamir Khan’s latest film Dangal – which opened to public on Friday,  has earned north of INR 1 billion on its opening weekend in India, reported NDTV.

Dangal is a biopic of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who hoped to win gold for India. He coached his daughters Geeta and Babita in the sport against all odds and finally Geeta fulfilled his dream at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The Nitesh Tiwari-directorial also stars Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra as Geeta and Babita Phogat, while television actor Sakshi Tanwar plays Phogat's wife Daya.

The film’s collections have risen substantially day after day and over the weekend. Dangal has also been released in Tamil and Telugu and the total number includes collections from the non-Hindi-speaking regions of the country as well.

On Monday, trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about the box office success of the film. “Dangal hits century, crosses Rs100 crore mark. Sunday’s business was humongous…smashing records and setting new benchmarks.”

And if numbers are not enough, Dangal opened to excellent reviews and top ratings world over, with critics, movie-goers and Aamir’s colleagues unanimously agreeing that it is his best film to date.

Aamir has previously released Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dhoom 3 (2013) and PK (2014) around Christmas time as well.
