Supporters accompanied their candidates who visited lawyers in the bar rooms, carrying stickers and badges. The civil as well as district and sessions courts were abuzz as supporters thronged both places in an attempt to garner support for their candidates. At the same time, contestants themselves were busy debating with each other at the gathering places of lawyers. On occasion, the argument could be seen turning into a heated one.
The Friend’s group, led by Asma Jahangir, is fielding Malik Arshad as its candidate for the presidential slot, while Chaudhary Tanveer Akhtar will contest for the Professional group. Contestants of both main groups claimed to enjoy the support of dozens of smaller groupings and both seemed confident of victory.
Six candidates, Irfan Sadiq Tarar, Ilyas Chohan, Syeda Tehsin Zuhra Kazmi, Mehar Tanveer Iftikhar, Musarat Rehman Warraich, Naveed Chughtai were contesting for the two available seats of vice president. Farhan Mustafa Jafri, Ajmal Khan Kakar, Chaudhary M H Shaheen, Rana Kashif Saleem, Malik Sohail Murshad and Malik Faisal Awan are in the running for two secretary seats.
