Sisters Zarlasht Faisal, CEO and imagineer of Zari Faisal Designs, and Zarmina Faisal, yogi, talk to us about their special bond. From fighting like Tom and Jerry, to sharing a love for travelling and being each others biggest support, these sisters truly are two peas in a perfect pod

What is your first memory of each other?

Zarlasht: I was the first one to receive the call when she was born. I picked up the phone, and someone from the other side was screaming, “It’s a girl!” Pure joy is what that moment felt like. I remember I was too scared to pick her up, as I was clumsy.

Zarmina: Her pinning me down and tickling me is one of my first memories of her.

What is the craziest thing you have done together?

Zarlasht: Some of our fights have reached the level of tricks only seen in Tom and Jerry. But recently, while it was raining outside we left the door open and spent an afternoon practicing Yin yoga. It was amazing!

Zarmina: That’s a long list. I can’t pick just one thing.

What did you get punished for the most as a child?

Zarlasht: I was a pretty crazy kid (though not as crazy as my sister). I remember being punished really badly for opening the door in a moving car. A lesson I’ve never forgotten.

Zarmina: I was wild and got punished a lot. I played rough and was quite disruptive. I would cause (minor) injuries. Once I tried to bring down the tent at an uncle’s wedding.

If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be?

Zarlasht: Her yoga wardrobe! She has the cutest workout gear — I would live in it if I could.

Zarmina: I already consider her closet to be an extension of my closet, so there is no distinction.

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do?

Zarlasht: Travel the world, only stopping to do yoga at all my favourite destinations. We have a mutual love for travelling.

Zarmina: Run my business remotely, and travel!

What is the one thing you love about your sister?

Zarlasht: She is such a strong person, inside and out, and I love that she never settles for anything less than what she has dreamed of. I love the path she has currently taken in life with her yoga practice — I know it is going to take her places.

Zarmina: I love her passion for what she believes in, and her determination to follow through on it. I may not necessarily agree with her every time, but it’s an amazing quality to have.

If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up?

Zarlasht: We are both very stubborn, so a third party intervention is usually required.

Zarmina: It’s Cold War for weeks, and usually our other sister, Myra, has to intervene.

What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too?

Zarlasht: She just trekked the Shimshal Pass! No small feat for a first timer; I think having the bravery and courage to venture into the unknown is phenomenal. It’s what I dream of having too.

Zarmina: She is super creative — whether it’s with her designs, marketing concepts, or event planning. I wish being this creative came as easily to me; I have to work at it a lot more!

Describe your sister in three words:

Zarlasht: A dreamer, loyal and a go-getter.

Zarmina: Opinionated, passionate and feisty.

Which fictional character is your sister most like?

Zarlasht: Jerry from Tom and Jerry.

Zarmina: Dori from Finding Nemo.

How are your personalities similar?

Zarlasht: We are both big dreamers and I love that we share this trait. At different points in life we both wished we were born in the Woodstock era.

Zarmina: At one time, we truly believed that our dog, Sushi, was a robot. That should give you a better idea of our similarities!

I can’t live without my sister because…

Zarlasht: Who else would drag me into a room that I thought was haunted in the middle of a fight? Yes, she did that once.

Zarmina: I would have nobody to fight with, or to get free clothes from!
