In letter to UN, PTI shines spotlight on Kashmir abuses

Imran Khan asks Ban Ki-moon to use his good offices and resolve festering dispute

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to take action against Indian aggression along the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary and the atrocities being committed by its forces in occupied Kashmir.

“As the leader of the second largest political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, I wish to draw your attention to the ongoing Indian aggression against Pakistan along the LoC and Working Boundary, as well as the use of violence and lethal weapons against unarmed civilians in Indian occupied Kashmir,” says the letter written by PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

Earlier, a meeting of the PTI leadership held in Bani Gala decided to write a letter to the UN secretary general in this regard.

Imran, in the letter, drew the UN’s attention towards global inaction in the face of a massive abuse of human rights in Indian occupied Kashmir.

“Excellency, you are aware that Kashmir is an issue on the Security Council agenda and the UN continues to have Observers for Kashmir [UNMOGIP]. India’s continuing refusal to allow UNMOGIP on its side of the LoC and its persistent refusal to allow UN human rights observers into occupied Kashmir is a clear violation of the UN Charter,” the letter stated.

In addition, India has continued to attack Pakistani civilians and its soldiers along the LoC and Working Boundary, Imran said, adding that these attacks have increased in intensity and frequency. Shamefully, India has also moved to deliberately target innocent Pakistani civilians, including travellers in civilian buses.

The PTI said that inexplicably the UN had not moved to stop this brazen Indian aggression. As a result, India has now gone beyond all norms of international state interaction even when states are in a warlike situation -as it has attacked an ambulance with clear markings. This increasing targeting of innocent civilians and ambulances is against all norms of international law including the laws of war, the PTI chief said.

The letter reminded Ban that both Pakistan and India were nuclear weapon states and India’s increasing military attacks against Pakistan presented a serious threat to regional peace and security.

Imran called upon the secretary-general to move and use his good offices to call on India to immediately stop its military attacks along the LoC and Working Boundary and demand from India to allow immediately UNMOGIP observers on the Indian side of the border.

“It is your duty as secretary general to ensure peace and security and enforcement of all norms of international law,” the letter said.

Meanwhile, PTI has also submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly against Indian aggression in the border areas and ceasefire violations along the LoC.

In the resolution, PTI Member Punjab Assembly Shoaib Siddiqui pointed out that India was continuously killing unarmed civilians in Indian held Kashmir for the past many years. He also condemned Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement about blocking Pakistan’s water.

Siddiqui asked Pakistani government to announce a clear policy against Indian aggression. He also demanded the government to boycott the Heart of Asia Conference 2016, which is scheduled to take place next month, in protest against Indian aggression.
