KARACHI: A senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and protocol officer of party chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has been detained by law enforcement personnel in civvies. The family and party have been unable to trace his whereabouts as no agency admitted arresting him.

Faisal Shaikh, a former Karachi division president of PPP's student wing, Peoples Student Federation (PSF), was whisked away by personnel in plainclothes during a raid conducted at his residence at Disalva Town of North Nazimabad on Friday night.

We were sitting outside our house as per routine when personnel in plainclothes in three police vans approached us and raided the house, explained Dilshad Babar Khan who is Shaikh's close aide and a member of the Janisaran-e-Benazir (PPP's special security force for Bilawal Bhutto's security).

"They [plainclothes personnel] came and put guns to the foreheads of every person sitting along with Faisal Bhai and threatened to shoot all of us if anyone offered resistance."

Shaikh's family said that they have approached the party to trace his whereabouts. "We have approached the party to enquire from the officials of the law enforcement agencies about his whereabouts and the motive behind his detention," said Shaikh's brother, Sohail Shaikh. "At least the reason behind the detention should be declared and whoever detained him should admit to it. "On the other hand, PPP also expressed its concerns over the detention of the party leader. "We are trying our level best to trace him," said PPP leader and a former special assistant to Sindh chief minister Waqar Mehdi.

He said that the PPP leadership has approached the Sindh police as well as its specialised units but no one so far admitted to his detention, adding that the party will provide him legal support if law enforcement agencies charge him in any case. Sindh police officials were unavailable for comments when contacted.
