KARACHI: The Supreme Court ordered the chief of Karachi police to present Ali Hassan Brohi in court on February 24. The state had moved the Supreme Court, claiming that Brohi, who was booked for possessing drugs, was granted bail in a hurry and so it should be cancelled.

However, Barrister Abid Zuberi for Brohi’s wife Samina had filed an application in court, saying that DSP Bahadur Ali has her husband detained somewhere in New Town. As a reward for detaining her husband, the DSP was also promoted, she maintained.

According to the police, the accused was arrested from Gadap Town and drugs were seized from his car.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Samina’s counsel told the divisional bench comprising Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Amir Hani Muslim that the case against his client’s husband was filed with mala fide intention. Even after he was granted bail, Brohi has not been released. When my client went with the bail papers to have him released, the police had already taken him to an undisclosed location from jail, he submitted.

Despite the court’s orders, the government has not released him and it is only requesting the cancellation of his bail as a cover-up for its mala fide intent, Zuberi contended.

After hearing these arguments, the bench ordered the CCPO Karachi to present Brohi in court on February 24 and also directed the Malir District Jail superintendent to bring all records of the accused with him at the hearing.

Earlier story

Samina has rebutted claims by the district officer of revenue and person in charge of the anti-encroachment cell, Shoukat Hussain Jokhio, about her husband Brohi. She told The Express Tribune with reference to a story published on January 30, that the DO had wrongfully claimed that Ali Hassan Brohi was a land grabber. She maintained that he was not involved in any land grabbing case.

She said that the DO had “distorted the facts”. She maintained that as the police had failed to implicate Brohi in any land grabbing case, they had “falsely booked him in narcotics cases”.

She said that despite orders by the Sindh High Court to not arrest him, the police had picked him up from Landhi jail, district Malir and he has been missing since January 17.
