PESHAWAR: Despite the provincial government’s claims of ensuring quality education across Khyber-Pakhtunkwa, majority of the schools do not have laboratories and science teachers.

Government Shaheed Osama Zafar Centennial Model High School No 2 Peshawar City is one such example, which struggles with the lack of science teachers and does not have laboratories.

The school offers four science subjects with nearly 300 students enrolled in the programmes. However, only one Chemistry lab is functional in the school, the labs for Biology and Physics have been non-operational for a long time.

A teacher, who did not want to be named, told The Express Tribune that the K-P government was well aware of the situation and official letters had also been sent to the authorities concerned but no action had so far been taken.

The school principal, however, rebutted the news and said they had a total of 21 teachers including 10 science teachers and all of them are well qualified. He said there were three labs and all of them are well equipped. When contacted, the department of education painted a rosy picture of the situation.

Officials claimed that unprecedented allocation had been made in the budget for the education sector and with the passage of time all reservations and loopholes in the sector would be addressed.

The result of the science students last year caused embarrassment for the schools and the K-P education department.

An education activist, Roman Khan, blamed the government for failing to provide modern science laboratories staff and equipment in Peshawar.
