KARACHI: Police have charged a train driver, Muhammad Rafiq, and assistant driver, Atif, with manslaughter and rash driving in the Landhi train accident case.

Nearly 22 passengers lost their lives and several others were wounded when Zakaria Express and Fareed Express collided with each other in Landhi locality on Thursday. At least three carriages were damaged in the collision. A senior railway administration official in Karachi said there could have been up to 1,000 passengers on board the trains when the accident occurred.

Following the accident, railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, while quoting the initial investigations, had said that the train accident in Landhi was caused by the 'irresponsibility' of the driver and the assistant driver of the train. The drivers first ignored the yellow signal and then the red signal, he remarked and announced compensation of Rs1.5 million for the family of each killed victim and Rs0.3 million for the injured.

‘People trapped inside carriages were yelling for help’

FIR No. 316/16 under sections 320, 322, 427/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 101 of the Railway Act was registered against the driver and assistant driver of the Bahauddin Zakaria Express at Quaidabad police station.

Police officials said that a case has been registered while further investigation was under way.
