RAWALPINDI: The administration of Chaklala Cantonment Board (CCB) on Wednesday approved the signing of a deal with a landowner to obtain 150 kanals on the Chakri Road to dump solid waste. The location is around 18 kilometers away from board areas.

The decision to obtain the land on rent for Rs220,000 per month was made at a monthly meeting of CCB. This is the first time the board decided to earmark an independent landfill site for waste disposal.

Currently, hundreds of tons of waste are being collected from CCB areas on a daily basis. They are carried to a site at Losar landfill site in Rawat which is used by the Rawalpindi district government.

A senior CCB official said the board meeting did not have any development scheme on the agenda as it faced financial constraints.

The other steps approved by the board included the provision of furniture for three schools, medicines for the CCB dispensary, construction of an underground water tank at Lalkurti and maps for residential buildings.

As far as the new landfill site is concerned, the board had to make deals either with the district government or Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) for the disposal of waste collected from different areas.

When contacted, CCB Executive Officer Rana Muhammad Rafique said the plan to obtain the landfill site at Chakri Road was in its initial stages and a final decision was awaited. To a query, the executive officer said negotiations with Rawalpindi Solid Waste Management Company were also in initial stages.
