ISLAMABAD: The capital police have requested the Interior Ministry to provide all necessary logistical support to it for special duties of security personnel on November 2 at the expected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) sit-in.

On October 14, the Islamabad Police operations AIG had sent a letter to an interior ministry additional secretary, which received a positive response. The letter had requested 20 prison vans and eight armoured personnel carriers (APC) from the Punjab Police.

The Punjab Police, however, only agreed to provide four APCs, after which a request was issued on October 26 to urge the Punjab government to provide the requested vehicles.

The letter, a copy of which is available with The Express Tribune, showed that a further request was made to approach the Sindh government for the provision of 20 prison vans and 10 APCs.

Army troops

Earlier, on August 23, the interior ministry approved the deployment of 350 soldiers in Islamabad after a request was made by the Islamabad chief commissioner. The troops were deployed on September 3 and were to remain in the city until December 3.

On Thursday, police sources told APP that 600 Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel had arrived in Islamabad to bolster security in the city, while contingents from the Punjab Police are also expected to reach Islamabad soon.

He said the sole purpose of calling in the reinforcements was to ensure effective security of the city, which is the prime responsibility of law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, Islamabad District Magistrate Mushtaq Ahmed has also issued a notification to impose Section 144 in the city for two months.

Further, in a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics Control on Thursday, Ghalib Khan moved a resolution asking the Interior Ministry to adopt measures in view of the PTI’s planned citywide ‘lockdown’.

The meeting adopted the resolution.
