Dr José Graziano da Silva, the head of UN’s food agency, was conferred with a honorary PhD degree by the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) on Thursday. Punjab Governor Rafique Rajwana, the university chancellor, awarded the degree to Dr José at a ceremony. Rajwana lauded the services of Dr José in food security and agriculture development. Dr José talked about the ‘zero hunger programme’ and how it has been successfully implemented in Brazil. He added implementation of the programme was possible in Pakistan but international collaboration, participation of civil society and political commitment were needed to make this programme successful.
