LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to present himself for accountability till Muharram or else the party will “shut down Islamabad” rather than conducting any protest rallies.

“We are giving you [Nawaz Sharif] time till Muharram. Just present yourself for accountability...else we will not allow you to run the government,” Imran said while speaking to a massive crowd in Raiwind on Friday.

Workers and supporters of PTI from across the country had reached the rally venue in Lahore for the party’s ‘Raiwind March’.

Imran reiterated his stance against the prime minister and his family of being ‘involved’ in graft cases. In an unconventional style of political demonstration, he showed a presentation, ‘exposing’ the Sharif family of owning offshore properties and how their statements contradicted.

A 40-feet-high stage was erected and seating arrangements were made at Adda Plot — close to the prime minister’s Jati Umra residence.

Raiwind march and bad timing

Leaked documents from the Mossack Fonseca law firm in Panama in April showed several world leaders, including the premier’s three children, Hassan and Hussain and Maryam, owning at least three offshore holding companies registered in the British Virgin Islands.

While the government says probe of the leaks should include all those named in corruption cases, opposition parties, mainly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf insists that it should begin with the assets of the premier’s family.

PTI raring to show its street power today

Meanwhile, Pakistan and India have been involved in a tense verbal and diplomatic spat since the Uri attack. At least 18 Indian troops were killed in an attack on a military airbase in Sri Nagar near the Line of Control (LoC). India accused Pakistan of perpetrating the attack, a charge the latter denied categorically.

Just a day after India claimed that its army carried out “surgical strikes” inside Pakistan with the support of military choppers, a senior Indian minister retracted the claim saying “these did not involve any aerial operations.”

Stringent security measures in place

Stringent security measures were taken by the city police and law enforcing agencies to protect the prime minister’s Jati Umra residence as well as the security of the PTI workers.

The premier’s residence was secured by placing containers, barricades and razor wires on the adjoining roads while police and LEA officials were deputed on top of buildings along the route of the PTI rally. Aerial surveillance of the entire area was also being conducted with the help of a helicopter.
