BAGHDAD: Twelve people were killed late on Friday in two suicide bombings claimed by Islamic State at a shopping mall in eastern Baghdad, police and hospital sources said.

More than 40 people were wounded in the attack at Nakheel Mall across from the oil ministry, the sources said.

One bomb went off at the entrance to the mall, the other in the parking lot.

Islamic State suicide bomber kills at least 15 in Baghdad

Unconfirmed amateur video published on Facebook showed what appeared to be four separate fires, including two cars engulfed in flames, under a highway overpass near the mall amid the wailing sirens of first responders.

Amaq news agency, which supports Islamic State, said in an online statement that two suicide bombers, one wearing a vest and the other in a car, had targeted "a gathering of Shi'ites" on Palestine Street.

The fight against Islamic State, which seized a third of Iraq's territory in 2014, has exacerbated a long-running sectarian conflict in Iraq, mostly between the Shi'ite majority and the Sunni minority.

IS-claimed Baghdad blast kills at least 119

The militants have lost ground in the past year to US-backed government forces and Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias, and Iraq is gearing up for an offensive next month to recapture the northern city of Mosul.

Yet such bombings show the group can still strike outside the territory its controls in northern and western Iraq.

OM Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah (OM may all be happy); Australia | 8 years ago | Reply Sane minded educated & liberal Pakistanis and Muslims from sub continent should reconvert back to Sanatan Dharma and avenge the attrocities and barbaric methods used to forcibly convert your Forefathers from Sanatana Dharma (popularly known as Hinduism) to follow Islam. Your roots have been with Sanatana Dharma and by reconverting back you will not only avenge the wrongs done to your Forefathers but also lead a respectful & life filled with dignity and proud as this is your original roots and there will be NO identity crisis for you and your children and they will be proud and happy to be disassociated with islamic radical tags. Frankly had I been that Unfortunate Muslim whose Forefather was forcibly converted; then I would have 100% reconverted back to my original roots culture tradition & religion called Sanatan Dharma as I can't change the wrongs done by history but i can surely change my present to give my kids a good peaceful & respectful future. (Moderator...though my above thoughts will be controversial please publish as there is no malice and is a pure genuine thought for goodness and peace for people & specially kids who will be suffering psychologically in the current world..thanks)
