In transition: Former health secretary passes away in US

Dr Syed Mohsin Ali’s served for over 30 years in major health institutions

ISLAMABAD: Dr Syed Mohsin Ali, an eminent Pakistani medical professional and former health secretary has passed away in the United States at the age of 79 after a protracted illness.

“He died peacefully at his home in Reading, Pennsylvania,” family sources told The Express Tribune on Thursday.

The family has not decided yet whether he will be buried in the US or his body will be brought back to Pakistan.

He is survived by a wife, five daughters, two brothers, one sister and ten grandchildren.

Dr Ali’s career spanned over three decades. He served in almost all major health institutions.

He held the position of Director-General Health and later was the only public health professional elevated to the position of secretary ministry of health.

He also served as Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Executive Director, National Institute of Health, Medical Superintendent, Polyclinic Hospital, and head of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi.

Dr Ali is remembered fondly by his colleagues and friends as a courageous officer, a bold decision-maker, a benevolent soul who inspired those around him and always helped his fellow beings.

His services for humanity at large and the country shall long be remembered.
