KARACHI: An anti-corruption team raided the office of the education and health district officer 1 on Thursday night for what some officers claimed was a search for a file on a Clifton plot and others said was corruption.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) team raided Saeed Malik’s office and took into custody several important files on a project, sources told The Express Tribune. Malik also confirmed the raid but did not say why the ACE team took such drastic steps. “The ACE team’s raid was due to a misunderstanding,” he said.

Senior officers of the city government tried to cover up the issue when they initially denied that the raid took place. A well-placed officer said, however, that some influential person had pulled some strings and sent the ACE team to take action against Malik over an 800-square-yard plot in Clifton.

The officer suggested that the influential person contacted one of the ACE directors to retrieve the files but the latter insisted that no such raid took place. He quoted the director as saying that the ACE team might have conducted the raid on its own, in which case a departmental inquiry will be initiated against them.

Meanwhile, a works and services department district officer said that the team raided the office on information about an alleged misuse of funds. He explained that the education and health district officer-1 also holds the Drawing and Disbursement Officer’s post, which gives him control over the public money released under the devolution plan.
