The Texas-born actor has reprised her role of the weight-loss and love-obsessed character for Bridget Jones’s Baby. Colin Firth is back as the reserved Mark Darcy and new addition Patrick Dempsey — of Grey’s Anatomy fame — plays Jones’s other love interest.
Zellweger first took on the role back in 2001 for Bridget Jones’s Diary, followed by 2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Both films were based on the best-selling 1990s novels by Helen Fielding. Now older and working as a television news producer, Zellweger described Jones as a character who still experiences plenty of mishaps. “She’s familiar to me,” said the actor. “But it was a different kind of experience creatively, having to figure out how to show that a person has evolved but, at the same time, not betray the essence of who they are.”
The latest film begins with Jones turning 43, following her break up with long-term partner Darcy. But after a chance encounter with him, as well as Dempsey’s character Jack Qwant, Jones’s confusions are taken up a notch. “She’s less naïve now which, I think, is great. Both of her suitors are great guys so it’s a different sort of rivalry,” revealed Zellweger. “I think she would be less prone to fall for the silly guy at this stage in her life.”
Bridget Jones’s Baby has been one of the most anticipated films of the year. Fans have been waiting for it ever since the shocking end of the 2013 book Bridget Jones: Mad about the Boy, in which Fielding killed off Darcy, making Jones a widowed mother. It is set for release on September 16.
