The two countries are already engaged in a tense standoff due to the unrest in held Kashmir, resulting in the death of at least 70 protesters by Indian forces.

The protest erupted after security personnel shot dead a populist separatist commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8, inviting criticism on the presence of troops in the valley.
On August 14, Indian border guards resorted to ‘unprovoked firing’ at Nezapir Sector near Rawlakot in LoC, targeting military posts and civilian population as Pakistan celebrated its 70th foundation day.
Pakistan has offered India talks on Kashmir unrest, whereas India holds the opinion that these should comprise of the 'infiltration' into the valley from the neighbouring country.
