Alina Shahid, the force behind The Style Journal, takes a moment to jot down the trends she loves this season. From the white shirt’s summer makeover, to other refreshing twists on wardrobe staples, she shares her favourites here

Off-shoulder

By now we all know that the off-shoulder top is not a trend, it’s a wardrobe essential. The season’s hottest trend can be sported both day and night, making it endlessly versatile and extremely popular.

Cut-out

Work it to the max or keep it subtle — the cut-out is the ultimate trend this summer. The best thing about these peek-a-boo holes is that they can be placed on just about any area — your chest, shoulders, arms, and midsection, revealing only a glimpse of skin.

Back-to-front

Many street-style stars were spotted at fashion week wearing their shirts backwards, and surprisingly, their outfits looked edgy and stylish. The trick is to leave the shirt unbuttoned from the top.

Knotted

The knot detail is everywhere right now, from high-end designers to high-street brands like Zara and Topshop. This chic style can be paired effortlessly with a wide-leg trouser or pleated skirt.

Voluminous sleeves

The cascading, waterfall sleeves lend infinite amounts of feminine charisma and elegance to any simple look. The sleeve is an accessory in itself so keep your outfit minimal and monochrome.

Patchwork

Patches were cool in the 90’s, and have made their fashion comeback this year. This is one trend you can do-it-yourself using fun and colourful sew-ons or stick-ons, to create a truly unique look.
