Early trailers for Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange have suggested that Stephen Strange will need to learn that there is much more to the world than what he knows. However, according to Benedict Cumberbatch, the British actor who is bringing the comic book Sorcerer Supreme back to life, the hero will not become too humble in the process, stated The Hollywood Reporter.

When asked what drew him to the project, Cumberbatch said, “The lure for an actor is the script, the director [Kevin Feige] and talking about how to make a character written in the 1960s and 1970s relevant now.” For him, the only way to do so was to make the character slightly less arrogant. “He will be arrogant, but also humorous,” Cumberbatch added.

The Sherlock star went on to say that seeing the footage of the film at last month’s Comic Con made him fully appreciate what he was involved in, for the very first time. “Some bits really made me think, ‘Wow! God! That is what I am a part of.’ You have conceptual art that they show you but you only realise what you’re a part of at the end of the process,” he shared. Doctor Strange is slated to cast its spell in theatres starting November 4.

If the character’s description sounds familiar, it probably should. After all, it was being arrogant but also humorous that made Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Downey’s future at the franchise looking uncertain post 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and its impending sequel, Cumberbatch might just be brought in to play Downey’s character as well.
