KARACHI: Desalination plants will be set up at the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Cantonment Board, Clifton (CBC) and the Korangi Industrial Area.

This was agreed upon in principle when Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) managing director Misbahuddin Fareed met station commander Brig Muhammad Anees at his office on Wednesday.

Fareed assured the station commander that DHA and CBC’s water quota would be raised by preventing water theft from the bulk-supply lines. They decided to launch a special operation to close illegal water connections and hydrants immediately. The water saved in this operation would be supplied to the areas of DHA and Clifton experiencing shortages.

The director also briefed the station commander about the demand and supply ratio of water in Karachi. “Because the population of the city is growing, KWSB has been facing problems in catering to the ever-growing demand,” he said. Along with the desalination midterm plan, they decided that it is necessary to complete the K-IV project, devised to meet the city’s water needs for the next 25 years.

CBC CEO Muhammad Hayat Mahar, KWSB deputy managing director, technical services, Ali Mohammed Palijo, KWSB deputy director, revenue, Qutubuddin Shaikh and KSWB chief engineer Najam Alam Siddiqui attended the meeting.
