Cooperation: UVAS, FJMU to work for improving nutrition

The two institutions will conduct research, exchange faculty members and researchers

LAHORE: The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) and the Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on Saturday for improving nutrition through research, educational activities and professional training of students in nutrition and dietetics.

UVAS Vice Chancellor Talat Naseer Pasha and FJMU Vice Chancellor Sardar Fakhar Imam signed the MoUs at the UVAS City Campus.

Under one of the agreements, the two universities agreed to share facilities and enhance opportunities through collaboration in research and academic proposals.

They agreed to undertake activities to develop centres of excellence in allied health domains, especially human nutrition.

The two institutions will conduct research, exchange faculty members and researchers, organise lectures and symposia, international meetings, conferences, and workshops.

Under the other MoU, the FJMU would facilitate a nine-month internship for undergraduate students of doctor of nutrition and dietetics of the UVAS at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Shahdara Hospital, Lahore.

Pasha said the MoUs would benefit students by providing them a platform for sharing experiences.

Fakhar Imam said this was the first MoU signed by the FJMU since its establishment. It would prove be a milestone for improving healthcare system in the country.

UVAS Faculty of Life Science Business Management Dean Nasim Ahmad, Faculty of Veterinary Science Dean Masood Rabbani and Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition Chairman Muhammad Nasir were also present.

Human Nutrition Clinic

The UVAS Department of Food Science and a Human Nutrition has established Human Nutrition Clinic at the City Campus, said a statement on Saturday.

Pasha and Fakhar Imam inaugurated the clinic. It will provide services related to nutritional assessment and screening, nutrition counseling for prevention and nutritional management of diseases especially obesity, diabetes, hypertension, gastrointestinal disorders, kidney and liver diseases.
