KARACHI: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Karachi on Friday to inaugurate a navy warship fleet tanker.

The 17,000-tonne heavy fleet tanker, Pakistan Navy's latest with state-of-the-art facilities, has been built with Turkey's cooperation. The design of the fleet tanker was prepared by Turkey, while the tanker itself was built at the Karachi Shipyard, Radio Pakistan reported.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Sharif said, "The project will further strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and Turkey." He further added that the tanker was a gift to Pakistan on its 70th Independence Day.

"It is an example of Pakistan-Turkey cooperation and the construction of the fleet tanker will help achieve self-reliance in defense production," the premier added.

"I congratulate the navy and the Karachi Shipyard for launching the tanker ahead of schedule," Sharif said while announcing a Rs100 million bonus for Karachi Shipyard employees.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah were among those present on the occasion.

Pakistan as a country should have done few years a go but poor thinking has done nothing most of the people think we just have to defend our coastline so few submarines are good enough I have been propagating for one or two carriers because that gives you enough leverage to deter India or any other power having bad design against Pakistan and creates pressure against those countries . I hope there is enough voices and opinions so planners might pay attention :east Pakistan could have been saved if Pakistan planners had carrier back then please have discussions on this important project this is a life line for Pakistan

LandofIndus | 8 years ago | Reply Pakistan next needs to acquire an aircraft carrier. We can lease or jointly construct it with China. One PN carrier will be sufficient to deter or defeat Indian Navy in the Arabian Sea and northern Indian/Asian Ocean. It will safeguard our seaward supply lines for Gwadar/CPEC. It will also support China's defense in the South China Sea by deterring Indian intrusion and divert Indian carrier towards the West coastline. We can also place nuclear-tipped cruise missiles on the carrier targetting Indian land facilities from the sea.

So saying that resources have been taken or got looted of:::: I don't believe in this concept I believe Pakistan as a country owns every inch of land all over-provinces : we don't need to ask any person for extraction of resources of any part of land : but Pakistan needs to provides basic needs to all peoples of every province

Rehmat Ali | 8 years ago | Reply Pakistan Govt Spending 14 billions rupees for buying 6 Navy patrolling Vessels. Why Govt not spending on buying or building Merchant Navy Vessels? Our Merchant Vessels fleet shrinked from 100 vessels in1973 to 10 vessels currently. Causing lack of job opportunities for Pakistani seafarers, specially Pakistan Marine Academy cadets. Pakistan paying more than 4 billions dollars annually to foreign shipping companies in terms of importing and exporting goods to Pakistani ports. If We develop our own merchant vessels fleet we can save this hard earned foreign exchange which we borrowed from IMF,loans,aids and foreign remittances.
