The service was inaugurated by MNA Hamza Shahbaz Sharif’s political secretary Waseem Qadir on Wednesday. LWMC Managing Director Bilal Mustafa Syed, LWMC board members Rafay Alam and Khurram Rohail Asghar were also present.
An LWMC spokesman said waste collection from narrow streets of the Walled City had always been a problem for sanitation teams.
“Now, the company can collect waste from the area efficiently,” he said. He said the design for the carts was prepared in consultation with residents of the area. He said it was modified after a pilot run. The spokesman said 35 waste containers had been introduced in eight union councils of the Walled City.
“This system can be expanded depending on its success,” he said. He said the LWMC was considering introducing this mechanism in other areas of the city where there streets were narrow.
