Torrent users are quite upset after US authorities shutdown one of the most popular torrent website KickassTorrents and arrested its owner Artem Vaulin from Poland.

Just weeks later another major torrent search engine Torrentz.eu mysteriously went offline leaving users to look for mirror sites to fulfil their torrent needs.

US authorities shut down KickassTorrents, arrest alleged founder

As if this bad news wasn’t enough, users are now struck with the news of false mirrors that are trying to steal their credit card details.

The most popular mirror for KickassTorrent, KAT.AM, surfaced right after the original site was shut down. However, the mirror was pulled within two weeks of its launch on a complaint from Motion Picture Association.

It seems that the site is now online again and this time it’s possibly in the hands of scammers who want to steal users' credit cards details.

The site looks exactly like the original domain but once users try to download a torrent, the sites displays a message asking them to sign up for a free account. It then proceeds to divert users to another site where it requests users to enter their credit card details.

Day after shutdown, KickassTorrents up and running again

Unlike the original website, the mirror does not use two-factor authentication, which reputable websites use as a barrier to possible hacking.

Hackread suggest that KAT.AM possibly fell into the hands of scammers after it was suspended by MPA who are now trying to cash in on the site's original credibility.

Torrents user are therefore warned against downloading files from such mirrors as it may end up costing them a lot more than thought.
