Imara Hashwani the girl behind the tasteful food blog @imara.doesnt.cook, short-lists of some of her favourite eateries in Karachi, and the best items on their menu, which are sure to get your taste buds tingling!

Okra

Noted as one of the top restaurants in Karachi, Okra’s cosy atmosphere, excellent service and quality food is what has kept the restaurant’s standard consistently high. When I go to Okra, instead of ordering a main dish, I order a variety of appetisers that the table shares. The vast range of appetisers ensures that  everyone is satisfied. Some of my favourite picks are ‘Biscuit Naan’ that I enjoy with ‘Fried Camembert Cheese served with a tangy Lingonberry sauce’. The combination of sweet and sour creates a balance in flavours that complement each other well. Another favourite is the ‘Oysters topped with chopped vegetables, herbs and vinaigrette’. If you are not a fan of seafood, I recommend Okra’s ‘Escargot served on mini toast’.

From The Kitchen Of Fatemah Rawji

When hosting a feast and inviting friends over, or celebrating a birthday there are only a few names that come to mind for dessert. The ‘Chocolate-layered Cake’ From The Kitchen Of Fatemah Rawji is both reasonably priced and divine in taste. The layered cake is rich in chocolate, however it is not overwhelmingly heavy. Instead, it has a perfectly soft and moist texture, which leaves you wanting more even if you’re trying to stick to just one slice.

Sakura

Looking for a great sushi experience with a spacious and lively ambience? Check out Sakura! Located at the Pearl Continental Hotel, this Japanese cuisine restaurant has recently launched their new menu and it is absolutely delicious. My favourites from the menu are the ‘Spicy Edamame’, the ‘Beef Tataki cooked in a citrus soy sauce’, the ‘Volcano Sushi’ and the ‘Discobery Maki’.

Auntie Munavar’s Food & Dessert

One name that comes to mind when looking for delicious desserts in Karachi is Auntie Munavar, who makes the most amazing ‘Strawberry Shortcake’. Although I have never been a fan of fruity desserts, Auntie Munavar’s ‘Strawberry Shortcake’ is the only exception I have made. The crispiness of the light biscuit dough goes extremely well with the softness of the strawberries and cream. This dessert is booming with flavour and is a must try for all.

Chai Wala

After work hours I like to unwind, indulge in a sweet or savoury meal, while enjoying the breeze outside. My go to spot to feel completely relaxed is Chai Wala. Although there are a number of dhabas in the area, Chai Wala was not only the first, but it also has an extensive selection and serves the best parathas. My top two picks here are the ‘Nutella Paratha’ and ‘Aloo Paratha’, served with a cup of elaichi chai.
