For peace: Youth call for end to nuclear weapons

LAHORE: Several Global Zero activists marked the 71st anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Lahore on Sunday, calling for an end to the nuclear threat. They organised similar activities in Karachi, Faisalabad and Islamabad. “We live in a world still recovering from Cold War politics. Nuclear weapons are horrific relics of the period. We cannot afford to continue on this trajectory of clinging to outdated weapons that jeopardise our security every day,” said Haneen Kahlid, the South Asia field organiser at Global Zero. In 25 cities around the world, including four in Pakistan, he said grassroots activists were demanding action to eliminate all nuclear weapons everywhere. In Lahore, the event was organised by Amina Shorish, Mehru Khan and Usman Zahid. The participants were given a free tour of Lahore followed by an informal discussion at Badshahi Masjid with guest Maria Malik. “Nuclear arms cannot guarantee a safer world,” said Shorish.
