KARACHI: More than 414 concrete houses and other structures including cattle farms have been removed so far in the anti-encroachment operation on Gujjar Nullah, according to a press statement issued by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Friday.

A 5.5-kilometre-long portion of the 13-km-long Gujjar Nullah has been cleared up by the municipal services staff, in addition to removal of debris, for the construction of concrete road on both sides of the drain, according to the statement.

The anti-encroachment staff carried out the demolition of concrete houses in Gujjar Nallah from near Café Piyala to Bangali Para and near Niaz Manzil with the help of heavy machinery on the directives of KMC administrator Laeeq Ahmed.

The drive is part of the city administration’s ongoing efforts to clear the city’s drains and nullahs of debris and encroachments.

Earlier, political parties, such as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, had campaigned for the provision of compensation for the evicted residents.
