KARACHI: The Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) president Alamgir Sheikh has said that all hopes of any silverware in the IBSF World 6-Red and Team Championships, being played in Egypt, now hinge on Asjad Iqbal, who has qualified for last-16, along with Sohail Shehzad in the World 6-Red event.

“We’ve pinned all our hopes on Asjad at the moment because he is a player who can do well and is in the best of form among all four Pakistani players in Egypt,” Sheikh told The Express Tribune.

“While the other three players have surprisingly not been up to the mark, Asjad has stood out, he added. “Team manager Munawwar Sheikh feels that the underperforming trio are playing at half of their actual ability. We hope Asjad and Sohail remain in peak form in the 6-Red last-16.”

Sheikh added that Sohail has been playing in the national circuit for 12 years and must show his experience at the business end of the tournament.

“All we can do is provide platform to players who do well in national tournaments. They now have the stage to showcase their skills, and if they can’t do well this time, we’ll have to revisit our strategy.”

Meanwhile, the duo of Asjad and Babar Masih, playing as Pakistan (1), have progressed into last-16 World Team Championship as well.
