KARACHI:

University of Karachi (KU) students protested on Wednesday a proposed fee hike. The protest, organised by Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT), was held to call the proposed semester fees unjust."We have no idea why the fees have been raised," said IJT Okasha Mustafa. "It is expected that the fee hike will be around 20% to 30%." Currently, the semester fee for social sciences departments is Rs5,000 while that for science departments is Rs7,000 per semester.

A KU spokesperson insisted the matter of fee hike has yet to reach the academic council, which makes the final decision on semester fees. "A few groups are spreading baseless rumours," he claimed. The officer added that the university's budget has not increased while its expenses keep climbing. "Students should not worry. Even if the fees increase, it will be around 10% to 20%," he assured.
