ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz on Monday inaugurated the rehabilitation work on IJP Road.

A seven-kilometre section of the road would be repaired and carpeted from Pendora Chungi to GT Road at a cost of Rs160 million in six months.

Aziz said that the important artery was in a dilapidated condition for long despite the fact thousands of vehicles pass through it. He said that an interchange would also be constructed near Pirwadahi.

The Islamabad mayor said that the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation will be functional very soon and it will address all civic issues on a priority basis.

He said that a water pipe line would soon be laid to get water from Ghazi Bratoha to Islamabad to overcome water shortage in the federal capital.

Earlier, Aziz told The Express Tribune that the road was neglected by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) over the jurisdiction issue.

“The IMC is taking this project as a challenge and it would be completed in a stipulated time,” IMC Chief Officer Asad Kiyani said.

Kiyani said that the prime minister had released a special grant of Rs5 billion to the CDA for improving the road infrastructure during outgoing year.

He said that the CDA had initiated maintenance and carpeting of roads and utilised around Rs1.5 billion from the special till June 30. He said that the civic agency has been stopped from further carrying work on roads and the directorate of roads has been transferred to the IMC and from the current financial year the local government will utilize the remaining funds.
