MARDAN:

At least 92 people who are transgender have registered with the social welfare department.

The registration of transgender persons with the social welfare department has geared up following the allocation of sufficient funds for the welfare of transgender community in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s budget.

Officials told The Express Tribune on Wednesday, the list includes people from the rural and urban areas of Mardan.

Asad Khan, an official at the department, said, the registration process was facilitated by an NGO working for the welfare of the transgender community.

“However, after funds were announced in the budget, members of transgender community have registered with the department on their own,” he said.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, rights activist Samar Minallah said allocating funds for the transgender community in the budget is a step in the right direction.
