KARACHI: A sessions court reserved on Wednesday its decision over the bail plea filed by an accused in the Halima murder case after hearing arguments from both sides.

At a previous hearing, the husband-wife duo, Rizwan and Sonia, held for the murder of Halima, who was found dead in a flat in Delhi Colony on July 31, had moved their bail applications in court. Rizwan withdrew, however, his application at the eleventh hour.

During the hearing, the counsel representing Sonia argued that his client was cleared in police investigations; therefore, she should be released. He supported his argument with a report filed by the investigators recommending release of the woman for want of evidence.

The lawyer added that Sonia had a daughter and in her absence she was going through mental suffering.

The prosecutor opposed, however, the plea insisting that the woman's role was still being probed and it would be confirmed when the final charge-sheet is filed in court. He told the court that during on-going investigations a suspect cannot be released as it might affect the investigations.

South additional district and sessions judge Suhail Ahmed Leghari reserved the verdict and fixed July 15 for its pronouncement. Meanwhile, the judge also disposed of the application by Rizwan as he decided to take it back.

Case history

Rizwan is deemed the prime suspect behind Halima's murder. Five days before her body’s recovery, he had handed over her four-year-old son to the Edhi Foundation claiming he found him abandoned. Later, it was found he was in a 'relationship' with the deceased.

He had disappeared but was caught by the police. His wife was already in custdoy.
