LAHORE: Abdul Sattar Edhi was the greatest philanthropist in the world. It is our duty to continue his mission of selfless service to the people.

These views were expressed by Lahore DCO Capt (r) Muhammad Usman on Monday. He was speaking at a candlelit vigil arranged by the City District Government Lahore at Faisal Chowk. Earlier, he led a walk from Quaid-i-Azam Library at Lawrence Gardens to Charing Cross to honour the memory of the deceased philanthropist.

Participants of the walk were carrying torches.

The DCO said Edhi had dedicated his life to serve the people.

He said the purpose of the walk and the vigil was to pay tribute to him for his philanthropic works. “All Pakistanis should follow his teachings. The nation cannot forget his services.

“I wish Pakistan could have more people like Edhi who helped the needy and ailing without expecting anything in return,” the DCO said. DCO Usman said the government was considering several projects to honour the memory of the philanthropist. “We have decided to name a major road in the city after Edhi Sahib,” he said.

The walk and the vigil were attended by a sizeable crowd including officials of district and town administrations, the Civil Defence and Police Departments, Rescue 1122, employees of the Edhi Foundation and civil society representatives. At the end of the vigil, fateha was offered for the departed soul.
