KARACHI: IG Sindh Sultan Babar Khattak has sent a summary to Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah suggesting an alternate use of the Rs350 million that was initially set aside to purchase vehicles to deal with terrorism.

According to police officials, Khattak sent this letter (B-II/459) in the last week of April before the budget for the next year was finalised. He has referred to President Zardari’s visit to Larkana in June, 2009, when he mentioned that every district must have at least two pick-up trucks to “better equip the police to deal with crime”.

Hence, Khattak has requested the chief minister to allocate Rs209 million for four-wheelers and other luxury cars, most of which will be used for their personal use. The Rs350 million was initially set aside to buy an antiterrorist scanning vehicle that is capable of detecting and defusing explosives and bombs, based on a recommendation by the British National Counter Terrorism Security.
