PESHAWAR: As part of the measures to cope with the monsoon season, the provincial health department has directed officials to remain alert and prepare for emergency situations.

“People were infected with deadly diseases that claimed several lives,” a senior health official told The Express Tribune on Monday. He added the department officials in districts needed to be prepared to counter any emergency situation.

When contacted, Health Service Director General Dr Parvez Kamal confirmed the developments. He assured the health ministry was monitoring the situation and was prepared for any kind of emergency situation following torrential rains.

He added they needed to prepare for diarrhoea, specifically, since waterborne diseases could infect children and adults.

“Yes, there are other diseases caused by water, but from what we have experienced, the number of diarrhoea cases reported are higher,” Kamal said. He pointed out lady health workers were asked to launch awareness campaigns in this regard.

The DG health also said a huge number of tourists will be travelling towards the hilly parts of the province. Therefore, officials have been tasked with looking after facilities and remain vigilant. They were told to keep stocks of ORS and anti-biotics.
